Water

Ah, the fun things that always happen when you're preparing to leave on a trip....

Saturday night we suddenly found ourselves without water.  After a bit of testing, I determined that the pump controller had failed, leaving the pump running constantly and sucking air most of the time.  Apparently the thermal protection had kicked in for a long period of time on the pump to keep it from self-destructing, but it was running when I found it.  There was definitely water avaiable, so late into the night and early Sunday morning, I was running out there every few minutes to run the pump.  Both I and the circuit breaker took a bit of wear, but just before we left for church, we got enough water in the cistern to pressurize the house.

Sunday and Monday the two oldest children took over pump duty (one operates the breaker while the other listens to the water pouring into the cistern) until we got a replacement controller and installed it.

This morning, in the middle of a load of laundry, we ran out again!  It seems that the flow on our well has dropped, and can no longer support the amount of water Michele's garden is requiring.  It was suffering anyway, so as of today, it is officially off life support.  Hopefully that will allow otherwise-normal usage (Michele's parents will be taking care of the 3 little ones here, so it would be nice to have water) until we get back and have time to deal with what may prove to be a rather ugly problem.
